your eyes to the skies for the wet weather. back to you. thank you very much. new this morning, a man is in the hospital after being shot by montgomery county police officer. this happened around 3:15 this morning near flora lane and woodland drive in silver spring. police were called there for reports of a man threatening to hurt himself and others. police realized the man was at his girlfriend's house. they got her and her two children out safely, and then they encountered that man in a stair well. police believe he was armed and there was a confrontation before the officer shot the man. another search is set for today for a missing teenager from northern virginia. family, friends and volunteers will be gathering at a park in fairfax at 10:30 this morning. 17-year-old bryan glen was last seen dropping his younger brother off at his school last monday morning. police found his car about a mile and a half away.

investigators are reviewing surveillance video from nearby dunkin' donuts. the big story this monday morning, controversial signs that refer to radical muslims as savages are going up on several metro stops today. >> a group filed a lawsuit after metro officials wanted to delay putting those up. fox5's melanie alnwick is live at the u street station with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. still no signs of those controversial ads yet. on thursday, lawyers for metro told the judge that the fbi was investigating a threat of violence if d.c. put up the ads. but the judge citing first amendment rights went ahead and ordered those signs be posted in metro stations by 5:00 today. the ads paid for by the american freedom defense initiative say "in any war between civilized men and the savage, support the civilized

man. support israel, defeat jihad ." many people say they're offensive because they basically equate muslims with savages, citing concern from three u.s. security agencies, metro wanted to delay displaying the ads until after the protests in the middle east over the "innocence of muslims" film subsided. the sponsor sued to put them up immediately and won. riders have mixed feelings. >> in our civil society, the first amendment has the greatest protection. the government needs to protect the speaker and for those who say they want to engage in violence, we'll arrest you for engaging in the violence. >> they should be allowed on free speech grounds, but i think it's irresponsible. >> it's kind of a big thing to call somebody a savage, but this is america. it's freedom of speech. >> reporter: again, we don't know what time those ads are going to be posted today. metro did say it was not going to appeal the ruling and would comply with the judge's order

which specify they need to be up by 5:00 this evening. there are three other stations that will be displaying the ads, georgia avenue, glenmont and takoma stations. just one ad in each station. police say they'll be ready in case there are protests, but they don't expect any. less than a week after the first presidential debate, president obama joked with supporters in california over the weekend, admitting he may not have been at his best in denver. the president took time to criticize mitt romney, going after what he claims is romney's plan for $5 trillion in tax cuts and cuts to pbs to help close the deficits. >> for you moms and kids out there, somebody is cracking down on big bird. cracking down on him. elmo has made a run for the

border. governor romney plans to let wall street run wild again, but he's bringing the hammer down on sesame street. >> president obama will continue campaigning in california today, with a star studded event in san francisco, including john legend and will.i.am. meanwhile, mitt romney returns to virginia today as he laughs off what looked like an uncomfortable situation in florida. the republican nominee was taking pictures with staff at a restaurant in port st. lucie when one of the staffers wiped romney's face with a napkin. romney can be seen laughing off the situation, but appears to be a little uncomfortable. prepare for a month full of debates. this thursday vice president biden and congressman paul ryan will face off in their first and only debate. next tuesday, the 16th, president obama and mitt romney will meet for their second

debate and the final debate is october 22nd. u.s. senate race in virginia takes the spotlight tonight as democrat tim kaine and republican george allen face off in richmond. the race between the two former governors has been close since the start. but a new poll of likely voters shows kaine with 52% and allen with 45%. the debate will be co-hosted by aarp virginia and the league of women voters of virginia. making headlines around the world now, and around the nation, we begin in venezuela, where president hugo chavez has been reelected for a third team. officials say the polls saw one of the biggest turnouts in years, with nearly 81% of registered voters taking part. it was his closest election yet. he has held the post nearly 14 years. chavez says he'll press more

forcefully for a transition to socialism. allison, authorities in colorado are ampling up their search for a missing 10-year- old. a backpack was found in the town of superior. a water bottle was also left behind. jessica was last seen last friday morning as she left her home to meet friends before school. jerry sandusky will learn his fate tomorrow. the former penn state assistant football coach was convicted in june of 45 counts of sexual abuse to young boys. he faces up to 400 years in prison. but experts expect his sentence to be closer to 30 to 60 years. he'll also probably be able to work a 30-hour week to earn money in prison. new developments in the deadly border shooting last week in arizona. the head of the border patrol

agents union say it was agents opening fire on each other. they will not say if the fallen agent was the first to shoot. a brawl broke out between two wedding receptions early sunday morning. this happened inside a hotel in philadelphia. witnesses say it started when two brothers got into a fight. something was thrown and it hit someone else. an uncle of one of the brides suffered a heart attack and later died. several people had to go to the hospital and three people were arrested. a health alert this morning, that we continue to follow. the number of rare meningitis cases linked to a tainted steroid treatment has now risen to 91, spanning nine states and killing seven. another case was reported in maryland this weekend. 18 cases reported in virginia with one death in each state.

the massachusetts pharmacy linked to the outbreak issued a voluntary recall of all of their products. every parent worries about their child wandering away from their side. but a new study shows it's a bigger concern for children with autism. fox5's sarah simmons is here with more on this new study. >> the pediatrician who led the study is the director of the interactive autism network. he says this is one of the few problems with autism that is life-threatening. according to the study, 49% of children with asd had wandered or eloped as they call it, at least once after age four. that's almost half. they looked at siblings without autism, and only 13% had ever bolted after age four. experts found the problem can be deadly for children by looking at media reports, they

found children with the disorder commonly died due to things like drowning or traffic accidents or other events after bolting from safety. some of the most common places they bolted from were their homes, stores and classrooms. parents say many times the children wanted to run or explore. others say they wanted to return to a place they enjoy or were trying to escape a tense situation. doctors say it highlights a problem that is not only a family concern, but a community wide problem. they're hoping to spread awareness and also to first responders. there's a push for a warning system, kind of like an amber alert system we use now. the goal is to make sure there is an immediate response when a parent reports them missing. >> thank you so much. coming up, the nats still going strong, as the redskins walk off the field without a win. dave?

this is a man playing cat and mouse with a deer. only this was no game. a deer with giant antlers tried to attack a man walking along a park in london, england. the man yelled for help while hiding around a wooden fence that's built around a tree. each time he'd move one way, the deer would follow. eventually he decided to climb the tree and the woman who spent considerable am of time shooting the video, then called police. heartworms are among the most dangerous and damaging parasites. i'm tired, and i apologize. i'm having trouble. >> it's monday. >> yes. damaging parasites but they're 100% preventable. it can be preventable with medications given monthly and should be given year round. >> unfortunately it's not

always the case. annie is learning more and introducing us to a pet who is heartworm positive. good morning. >> good morning. this is carson, and he is heartworm positive, and we're learning more about that this morning from our good friends, melanie the founder and president of the rescue, and of course dr. keisha parish, who is with the hickory ridge animal hospital in columbia, maryland. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> we have edgar in your lap, melanie and carson. let's start with carson. he is heartworm positive. what does that mean? >> carson has heartworm disease. he contracted that from a mosquito bite. over the course of several months the mosquito transmitted a larva into his bloodstream that's turned into worms. we don't know how advanced it is or how many worms he has,

but he'll be treated this week. >> how long is the treatment process and how does that affect his day-to-day life? >> some pets can be more symptomatic. he's not showing many symptoms. the treatment is a three-dose treatment. will take a month to go through the treatment. receives one treatment and 30 days receives a second and third treatment. will take about six months for it to clear his system. >> clears out and he's back to being good. what are some symptoms or things that -- how do you know if your dog has it, first of all? >> sometimes you won't know your dog has it. some dogs are asymptommic and we find out they're positive from a blood theft that's run annual -- test that's run annually. some dogs show signs of cough, can have exercise intolerance, lethargic. they can develop heart disease from the heartworms.

>> the good news is this disease is 100% preventable with a monthly pill. i give my dog a monthly pill. i have to set an alarm. with a busy life, i forget. some owners will forget. is there another option for those people always on the go? >> there are. there is three different types of treatments. the pill you give every month and different manufacturers for that. there's a topical medication you can use monthly, and an injectable medication you can give once every six months. your veterinarian gives that. that helps if you have an issue being compliant. >> that's good. melanie, you have edgar. >> yep. >> he's so cute. he looks like my dog. i'm guessing he's a poodle mix. >> he is. he was part of a seizure. there were four dogs. he's about two years old. he's a little bit fearful of men. >> of men? >> of men. but he's an awesome dog.
